Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is the first FDA-approved treatment that temporarily improves many common signs of aging. The treatment reduces the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and folds that can appear:

  • At the corners of your eyes
  • In the space between your brows
  • Across your forehead

Botox can also be used off-label to address lines and wrinkles in other areas of your face.

You may know of Botox as an aesthetic treatment, but the medication is also used in numerous medical applications and has more than 50 years of clinical data supporting its safety and efficacy. It’s formulated from Clostridium botulinum, a substance present in lakes, soil, and forests. In certain concentrations, this substance is dangerous, but the volume used in medical and aesthetic applications is carefully controlled and perfectly safe.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neurotoxin and works by temporarily preventing targeted muscles from going through their full range of motion. It’s commonly said that Botox “freezes” or “paralyzes” your facial muscles, but that description is not fully accurate.

Your muscles will still be able to move, and you’ll still be able to make normal facial expressions. The muscles will simply be unable to tug and pull your skin into folds, lines, and wrinkles.

How is Botox administered?

The process of getting Botox takes very little time. You’ll receive three injections on each side to treat crow’s feet, and five injections for forehead lines and frown lines. You may feel a slight pinch as the thin needle enters your skin, but there’s no significant discomfort, and the injections only take a couple of minutes from start to finish.

You’ll see the effects begin to develop within 24-48 hours, and they will last around four months. At that point, you’ll notice your lines and wrinkles gradually returning, and can decide if you’d like to come back in for another round. Research shows that results can last even longer with subsequent Botox treatments.

One of the great things about Botox is there’s no need for advance preparation or any form of downtime. Many men and women come in for injections and then return immediately to their job or other daily routines.
